On September 3rd, Red Land varsity officially began practice for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. The team hit the ice at Twin Ponds West at 3:30pm as is the routine for practices here on out. Beginning as a puckless practice, the team worked on skating skills which will be essential in the team's success in the upcoming Tier I season. Coach Joe Kowalczyk and Coach Jim D'Angelo gave good "first impressions" toward their team, both new and old players, and explained their coaching philosophy and expectations in a manner needed at the intense varsity level. Returning players from last year's Viola Cup team will be expected to show leadership, in terms of aiding freshman as well as setting a good example toward their new teammates. Freshman are expected to do their part in stepping their game up to the varsity level and to learn from the returning veterans. As the intense practice went on, pucks were brought onto the ice and players went through many shooting drills, while Coach Joe stressed many points on the importance of getting as many decent, hard, accurate shots as possible as it will be an important factor in the upcoming campaign. As the players skated off the ice, fatigued from a tiring workout, they were optimistic about the season to come. With high aspirations, the team looks to help eachother and work their hardest in reaching the team's goals.
Red Land's middle school team also hit the ice, this time on September 4th. Led by new Coach Chuck Acri, who coached the team the last half of this past spring season, the middle school Patriots saw returning players, as well as some fifth graders who spent the spring season with the team, learning the expectations Coach Acri holds for them. With the loss of goaltender Jared Locke to the Varsity squad, the team acquired Devon F. whos athletic experience in baseball and soccer, as well as his positive attitude towards learning from varsity goalie Will Ott will be a great benefit towards the team this upcoming campaign.
